Volunteer at the Library

The Indian River Area Library loves our volunteers! If you want to help out in the library, please reach out to us. Volunteer positions include reading during story hour, participating in other library events, and greeting library patrons. All friendly faces welcome!
Due to a new state law under the Youth Employment Standards Act, volunteer opportunities at the Library are only open to students ages 14-17 with a valid work permit from the state of Michigan.

The Indian River Area Library will abide by the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Read a book chosen by our librarians to children ages 0-5 years old! Storytime is every Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. If you are interested in volunteering, you will need to set up an appointment ahead of time to meet with a librarian and demonstrate your Storytime skills by reading a story at the Library out loud.

Books have a way of getting mixed up! Volunteer to help put them back in their places. Shelf readers go through the shelves and find books out of order and help to rearrange them.

Volunteers will compile a list of materials around a theme. You choose a theme that you think will be of interest to others or of educational value within a specific age group. Age groups include children aged 0-6, children aged 7-12, teens aged 13-19, or adults 18+.

Book lists will ideally include: (1) For each title, the title, author, and a brief description (may be copied and pasted from our catalog (2) 15 titles total, at minimum (3) All materials must be in circulation at the Indian River Area Library.

Some of our events need volunteer help to ensure their success. Some options may include leading a table with a simple craft, supervising the crowd, greeting patrons at the door, counting incoming patrons, among other opportunities.

On occasion, we need help decorating the Library! We mainly need volunteer help when decorating for our summer reading program at the end of May/beginning of June; our month-long Halloween theme at the end of September; and in time for Christmas in Indian River mid-November.

Do you have the talent to teach a fun craft class? This could be for any age; we are willing to work with you regarding what you would like to teach. Supplies would be purchased by the Library, unless you would like to donate your own materials for use by class participants.

Assemble craft kits, prize packages, promotional items, or whatever else we may need when you are in. 

Time to lean, time to clean! The Library can always use help with dusting shelves, cleaning up the Makerspace Room, sweeping, and more.
